ARTIST STATEMENT
Collaborative work by Ania Gilmore, Gunta Kaža, Małgorzata Oakes, Stephanie Stigliano created for the traveling exhibition FREEDOM Project
that talks about ongoing global conflicts and issues related to human rights, violence, aggression, war, social and racial injustice.
Ania Gilmore: "In order to bring us back together, we need to recognize what tears us apart; a collection of words written by people from all over the world answering the question: What divides Humanity today?"
Gunta Kaža: "Freedom is messy, it is prickly, especially when one person's freedom dominates and impinges on others."
Malgorzata Oakes: "FREEDOM Project is my contribution to speak out about the significant issue regarding lack of freedom that touches many lives around the globe. It is important we continue to be resilient to strive for a better future."
Stephanie Stigliano: "As I feel increasingly desperate in a hostile world, these prints represent my hope that nature will ultimately prevail."

Gunta Kaža teaches undergraduate courses at the Massachusetts College of Art and Design. She received an M.F.A. from the Rhode Island School of Design, and a PsyaD from the Boston Graduate School of Psychoanalysis. Ordinary, mundane objects inspire her work, which reflect moments of detachment and containment. Gunta is interested in the intersection between art and the study of the mind.
Malgorzata Oakes is a Polish born artist residing in New York. She holds a Ph.D. from the Doctoral School of the Eugeniusz Geppert Academy of Art & Design in Wrocław, Poland. Oakes obtained her MFA in Printmaking at the Academy of Art & Design, Wrocław. She is an Assistant Professor in Studio Art at Marist College. Oakes actively shares her innovative research during her workshops at Women’s Studio Workshop, Anderson Ranch Arts Center, Garrison Art Center and Manhattan Graphics Center. Her work is exhibited nationally and internationally with solo exhibitions in France, Spain and Poland. She is a recipient of fellowships and scholarships at the Constance Saltonstall Foundation for the Arts, Zea Mays Printmaking and Frans Masereel Centrum. She has been awarded various national and international residencies. She has been a Visiting Professor at the Academy of Art & Design in Wrocław, Poland and the Institute of Art & Design at the Pedagogical University, Kraków, Poland.
Since 2020, Stephanie Stigliano reordered her studio practice to use art to build community, increase communication, and share creative energy. Recently she participated in two artist/poet collaborations, Lines Connecting Lines, at UMA Gallery in Malden. Inspired by Julian W. Smith’s poem, Out, Between, she produced a set of four prints. She contributed to a limited edition book inspired by Susan Roney O'Brien's poem, The Edge of the Ocean. She meets weekly with a group of artists to produce online interactive drawings. She exchanged post cards with book artists near and far in the project Wish You Were Here and is contributing to Postcard Love, in which artists send postcards to The Soldier's Homes in Holyoke and Chelsea, Mass. She has served on the board of The Boston Printmakers as editor of The Quarterly and Member News. She is a co-founder of New England Book Artists. Stigliano is a professor at Boston College.
